Sometimes adding something fun into our studies can make all the difference in the enthusiasm our children bring to their schoolday. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to review With Lee In Virginia from Heirloom Audio Productions as a follow up to our study of the Civil War.
What We Received:
For this review, we received a physical copy of the 2 disc CD set that contained the audio drama on it. In addition, there was a downloadable study guide and other bonus items:
- an MP3 version of the audio drama
- an ebook of With Lee in Virginia by G.A. Henty with updated color graphics
- official soundtrack
- cast poster, and
- a printable copy of Robert E. Lee’s inspirational quote to his son
Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less.

How Did We Use this Product:
Our experience with With Lee in Virginia began with our 11 year old stalking our mailbox. You see, we have had the opportunity in the past to review both Under Drake’s Flag and For Freedom’s Cause audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions. These have been so well done that our son is always asking when the next one will come out. So, he truly was stalking the mailman once he knew that we were selected for this review and the anticipated shipping schedule.
When it arrived in the mail, he immediately tore it open and ran to the nearest CD player. Those CDs were taken from room to room and listened to multiple times. We did spend time listening while riding in the car and also while canning vegetables from the garden. It wasn’t long before he asked for me to download and transfer the MP3 version to his MP3 player. The total playing time of the audio drama is approximately 2 1/2 hours in length and is appropriate for ages 6 through adults. And yes, the story line and sense of adventure really do captivate the attention of both the young and old.
After the initial listenings, I was able to direct some of our discussion through the use of the study guide materials. This was one of the downloads that I mentioned above. It contained key vocabulary, listening questions to see how actively your child was listening, and more thought provoking questions and discussion starters related to the historical events and their impact. There were also some small bible study segments that can help your children sort out Biblical truths related to this historical event.
The Civil War can be a tough topic in our home. Through our marriage, my husband and I have brought together the North and the South. I have to admit that our growing up years have certainly shaped our interpretation of this historical time. It is only through careful study that we have tried to bridge these two worlds into a well rounded study of a difficult and emotion-filled time in our nation’s history. The incorporation of materials like With Lee in Virginia make this so much easier.
With Lee in Viriginia is certainly entertaining. The adventure, vocal inflection by the cast, and the amazing soundtrack really take you into the story. There is much talk in homeschooling circles about living literature. This is truly living audio drama in the way it transports you right back as if you were in the battles and story line.
This is a resource that can also be used to introduce your child to the study of the Civil War as a kind of warming up to a larger study or be used as a resource in the midst of your studies.
I like to think of the Heirloom Audio Productions audio dramas as matches. For younger and older listeners, it can really light a fire in your children to leap into the great literary works of G.A. Henty. These older classics are sometimes overlooked or intimidating at first glance. However, listening to one of the audio dramas from Heirloom Audio Productions may be just what your child needs to challenge themselves with some of these great volumes.
However, if you choose to use With Lee in Viriginia, I am sure that you will not be disappointed. Our sons are already asking when their next production will be released.
